A representative woodpecker along with a Japanesepygmy woodpecker in the Asakawa River basin. Observed in mixed forests atKomiya Park and Naganuma Park, groves at bases of hills and atriverfronts. With a hard, abrupt voice ket ket, the bird is easilyidentifiable in the nearby trees. @Malefs crown and nape and part ofmustachial stripe are red, while femalefs forehead is grey, which is anidentification point.
