Although thebird is a common winter visitor to Japan, the bird is rarely seen in AsakawaRiver basin. The four Chinese characters of the Japanese name each means"gold, black, and white on flight feathers," representing golden eyes, blackbody (except for flanks), and white on flight feathers. Male: long blackcrest drooping from the head; Female: body brownish above the waterline, andnot prominent shorter crest.
