Winter visitor to Asakawa River basin. Male hasgreenish-black head like male Mallard, but the species can be easilydistinguished with its diagnostic broad dark spatulate bill.@ Generally, itis difficult to identify female ducks from those of other species because ofsimilarity in plumage, but, thanks to the broad bill, female NorthernShoveler can be easily distinguished. The species feed by scooping on thesurface with its spatulate bill like shovelling.
