Male is well known with its spectacular plumage. Though not a usualvisitor in Asakawa River basin, the species is a regular winter visitor inthe neighbouring Shiroyama Lake and Sagamihara Sedimentation Pond inKanagawa Prefecture, and residents in the area are looking forward toseeing the bird every year. In contrast to the spectacular colour of Male,Female is somber-coloured; however, Female may be easily distinguishedfrom the females of other ducks with its body and with its distinct whitespectacles. Male in eclipse resembles Female, but may be distinguishedfrom Female with its red bill (Female: black bill).
